We are currently designing a new wayfinding concept for the metro stations in Antwerp, which operation started 50 years ago.
The stations contain differences and idiosyncrasies born over several decades. This includes over signed and over dimensioned architectures, some with narrow, mirrored concourses, and partly retrofitted elevator shafts and escalators. Add to this a complex network structure in renovation, constantly changing destinations, and the quest for intuitive navigation poses a real challenge.
streamlining the decision process for travelers
Central information points are added at station entrances as well as the platforms. Key decision and confirmation points are highlighted and landmarks are added. Station confirmation signs at platforms are a lot larger and better spotted from far away.

During a pilot phase, we put up temporary signs to evaluate its effectivity, and gather feedback for ideas and improvements. These changes will be implemented when the wayfinding concept rolls out metro wide.
